What this guide covers:
Coupon Tracking Overview
Coupon codes allow you to track affiliate-driven sales without relying on referral links. When a customer completes a purchase using an affiliate’s unique coupon code, the conversion is attributed to that affiliate automatically.
Coupon tracking is especially useful for:
Influencer marketing
Offline promotions
Podcast or video mentions
Scenarios where links are not practical
What You Need Before You Start
Before using coupon tracking, make sure that:
Cookies are enabled in your store and browser, as Tapfiliate relies on cookies to identify and attribute affiliate referrals
Your eCommerce platform supports coupon or discount codes.
Your store is correctly integrated with Tapfiliate
Coupon codes are created in your store before assigning them in Tapfiliate
Note: Coupon codes are often case-sensitive. Make sure the code in Tapfiliate matches your store exactly.
Creating Coupon Codes
Step 1: Create a Coupon Code in Your Store
Go to your eCommerce platform’s discount or coupon section (for example: Shopify Discounts).
Create a new coupon code.
Set the discount value, usage limits, and expiration date.
Save the coupon.
Note: Tapfiliate does not generate coupon codes automatically. Coupon codes must first be created in your eCommerce platform and then assigned to Tapfiliate. Below is an example of shopify tool discount code creation section:
Step 2: Assign the Coupon Code to an Affiliate
In Tapfiliate, go to Affiliates.
Click on the affiliate’s name to open the details panel.
Locate the Coupon code field.
Enter the coupon code exactly as created in your store.
Save your changes.
Once assigned, the coupon code will appear in the affiliate’s portal alongside the referral link in their program details.
Note: You can also assign affiliate coupon codes in bulk while bulk importing affiliates. Please note that we do not have an option to bulk update affiliate coupon codes for already added affiliates.
Tracking Coupon Conversions
Native Coupon Tracking
Native coupon tracking is available for integrations with Shopify, woocommerce, Teachable and Memberful. Conversions are automatically recorded for these tools when a customer completes a purchase using a tracked coupon code.
Tracked data includes:
Order value
Affiliate attribution
Conversion date
Tracking Coupon Codes via Zapier
If native tracking is not available, you can track coupon conversions using automation via Zapier.
General setup steps:
Trigger: New order created in your eCommerce platform.
Filter: Order contains a coupon code.
Action: Create a conversion in Tapfiliate.
Map the coupon code, order value, and customer details.
Managing and Updating Coupon Assignments
Removing or Changing a Coupon Code
If you need to update or remove a coupon code:
Open the affiliate’s details panel.
Update or remove the coupon code field.
Save changes.
Removing a coupon code does not delete historical conversions.
Troubleshooting and Best Practices
If conversions are not tracking:
Confirm the coupon exists and is active in your store
Ensure the coupon code matches exactly in Tapfiliate
Verify your integration or automation is active
Best practices:
Use clear naming conventions (for example: AFF_JOHN10)
Test coupons before sharing them with affiliates
Avoid reusing the same coupon across multiple affiliates
